Information Literacy (Questions/Answers)

Q1.  My perception of the meaning of information literacy is that it is important to nursing as a profession.

From my perspective, information literacy is a standard of care in regard to information gathering. The American Library Association (ALA) describes information literacy as a sense of capability necessitating persons to be familiar with the time the information is required and possess the skill to establish, assess, and efficiently utilize the required information. Information literacy is becoming increasingly significant in the modern upbringing of speedy technological transformation and the reproduction of information possessions (Sensmeier, 2009). Information Literacy is important to nursing and the nursing profession since it provides a structure for staff and scholars at the links and advanced stages in improving information literacy expertise intended for substantiation supported on nursing performance. It also encourages using an ordinary foreign language in nursing schools and librarians to discuss scholars’ conversation skills and talents. Moreover, it gives the management and core curriculum board a collective indulgence of student competencies and requirements.

The Association of College and Research Libraries) Principles from 2013 noted the following rule regarding information literacy: give the confidence to use ordinary verbal communication in a nursing facility, in addition to librarians talking about scholarly information and looking for expertise. If healthcare providers are not all on the same page it leads to confusion for the patients and the general public regarding the correct order of procedure. At the turn of the 20th to 21st century, the Federal Guidelines for using the AED in public places, federal buildings, schools, and other public places had guidelines drawn up by the American Heart Association (AHA) for training non-health providers. The guidelines were the same across the board. The West Coast didn’t have rules to follow that were different from those of the East Coast, and so on. This is a prime example of needing to encourage the use of a common language. The use of the AED was at the federal level. When it comes to the general public and our patients we hold their lives in our hands, therefore it is even more important to make sure that the correct information is given across the board, starting with nursing students, librarians, etc.

Q2. Discuss the standards I see I use as I proceed through the MSN program, stating the significant standards in my practice and why.

Champlain College conducts a study using cell phones as an additional resource for learning and gathering information. In the article, it is noted that whether we love it or not, whether we are ready for it or not, movable education signifies the subsequent step in an extended custom of technology-mediated education. It will attribute to the latest approaches, applications, and apparatuses, along with possessions to understand the assurance of ever-present, all-encompassing, individual, and related knowledge (Torras & Saetre, 2016).

The piece of writing concludes by stating that like any other action or pedagogical instrument, it is supposed not to be the barely one utilized. Technology is effective because it is well-recognized and ever-present among students. Practically, each scholar possesses a mobile phone; texting is their major type of communication (Torras & Saetre, 2016).

Standards are necessary because in general, one person’s standard might not be the same as another person’s. In healthcare we need uniformity, when it comes to healthcare the standard should be the same across the board. Continued education is a must, and it is one of the standards adopted by the ACRL (Torras & Saetre, 2016).

Q3. How I envision a partnership with the USM librarian and the library where I work.

Presently, I make use of the online library, and the helpline has been helpful in locating articles and research information. I plan on continuing to use the online Library and the USM Librarians.

Q4. Discussion of my IL objectives and how they fit my new IL competencies.

As data technology becomes the way of the future and paper is done away with, it will be imperative to use plain language and a standard of education across the board. I hope to make better use of evidence-based practices and be able to present some of the practices in the format of Informatics spreadsheets.  There will be a need to provide a set of guidelines to help with continued education. When it comes to learning, visual aids help make a point or remember a certain procedure or task (Gordon, 2016).
