How the Completed Course Activities Support and Meet the Course Outcomes

This course provides an extensive background of how nursing informatics are used in clinical practice, comparison between the concept of nursing informatics and concept of nursing professional nursing judgment, and virtual learning environment (VLE). The course also gives emphasis on roles of advance nurse practitioner (APN) and the applications of project management concepts, and the concept of bring your own device (BYOD) and security issues that might be encountered when BYOD is allowed in a healthcare organization. These course activities support and meet the course outcomes in various ways including providing understanding on how nursing informatics is used in clinical practice, importance of health informatics, applications of project management concepts, data breaches and security issues that may be encountered with BYOD.

Nursing Informatics

Nursing informatics play a significant role in nursing practice. Understanding the important of nursing informatics helps the graduate to in proper documentation of patient information as well as sharing patient information. Nursing informatics is changing the face of healthcare and facilitate collection, analysis and leveraging data. For instance, the use of electronic health records (EHRs) significantly affects delivery of care by allowing easy access to patient information (McGonagall & Mastrian, 2014). The use of EHRs have replaced paper charts with hand written notes. This competency enables the graduate to document and access patient information with each irrespective of their location and this facilitates provision of quality care. The graduate can use TANIC self-assessment to determine the level of understanding of nursing informatics.

Application of concepts of project management

The competency for a project manager is essential for an advance nurse practitioner. This activities of this course prepares the graduate to become a competent project manager by providing understanding of the qualities of a project manager and roles of advance nurse practitioner. According to Collins, (2016) a project manager carries out five critical roles in implementing change in a healthcare organization. These roles include designing and planning, control and monitoring, framing timelines, implementing change and evaluating the change. Understanding this roles prepared the graduate to lead their team in the process of implementing change. Learning advance nurse practice roles and skills enables the graduate to provide care in both critical and emergency situations. Also, advanced practice nurses are prepared to take care for patients with chronic conditions such as cancer and chronic kidney disease. Thus this competency enable a graduate to handle patients with chronic conditions in various clinical situations.

Data breaches and security issues associated with BYOD

Data breaches presents one of the most challenging data management issues in healthcare system. Stored health information is at greater risk of data breaching through cyber intrusions. This course creates awareness of the possibilities and impacts of data breaches. With the alarming issues regarding security of health information stored in EHRs, this course provides an extensive understanding on possible measures about risk factors predisposing breaching of data. This competency enables the graduate to protect sensitive patient data which can expose important data that can be used maliciously by intruders. The course also provides information about the emerging trend of bring your own device (BYOD) where the organization allows the employees to use their devices at work. Although this trend cuts costs for organization’s investment on equipment, it is associated with adverse data security issues especially when the employee do not comply with outlined guidelines to avoid these security issues (Wang, Wei, & Vangury, 2014). This competency enables the employee to protect health information while they use their devices at work.
