History of Curriculum Essay

The importance of curriculum history and philosophy cannot be neglected while studying the current educational moment. There are some eminent and influential people in the system of our education that has helped in revamping the present curriculum along with the educational system. The history of a country can affect its educational system along with the type of curriculum it possessed. The beginning of curriculum started in 1918 when the book entitled as “The Curriculum” by Franklin Bobbit was published. From that time, many amendments have taken place in the principles, contents, and purposes of the curriculum. The curriculum reflects the culture and society and the needs, information and knowledge of the society collectively combined to form curriculum. The history of the curriculum is important as it not only evolves with time but it also develops the society. There are some major theories and principles by curriculum theorists in the past that have a huge impact on the present education moment. It plays an important role in improving the economy of the nation. Along with this, it provides answers and gives logical reasoning to many concepts that are prevailing in the present educational system. It is recommended that there should be a chain built for the development of the society. The development of curriculum matters a lot in setting the heading of progress in an association, at the smaller scale as well as at large scale levels. As long as the key factors of the curriculum development are clear in the organizer’s brain, front-line accomplishments in different concerns can be figured it out (Alvior, 2018).

It is prominent that philosophy helps in exploring new teaching methods and how it should be applied in the classrooms for getting more achievable results of the teaching-learning process. Philosophers of the past have influenced significant impact in clearing up the relationship in the idea of educational modules improvement to process and furthermore give an establishment to educational programs. In the book entitled as “Republic” by Plato, he has displayed curriculum which is still considered as the center of the curriculum of today. Philosophy has a direct effect on the planning of curriculum as it provides you guidelines for selecting objectives along with determining ways to evaluate the curriculum for improving it (khan, 2018).

The entire curriculum is developed wholly by teachers and the outcomes of it largely depend upon the quality of teaching along with various assessment techniques and learning strategies used. Teachers cannot be taken for granted as they are the deemed as an active participant in shaping the classroom realities and they act in light of their own attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs of the specific situation. Teachers are responsible for presenting curriculum inside the classroom along with outside the classroom. According to me, a teacher does more than rather just implementing the curriculum. It is evident that the administrators are there for developing the curriculum; however, they cannot develop the curriculum quickly without the assistance of teachers. Teachers know how a curriculum can be best for hteir students and they are bound to play their role in every step of the curriculum development process. It is usually the teachers that know what is suitable for the students and what curriculum should be adopted so that the students grab the key message of the topic easily. They can provide awareness into the type activities and materials that should be used in the curriculum to maximize the success rate. The quality of education cannot be achieved unless teachers provide their assistance in developing the curriculum and implementing it with others (“Role of teacher in curriculum implementation”, 2018).
