Drake’s Perpetual Sadness Article Analysis

Summary

This article is about singer, rapper and actor Drake who made his debut in 2009. Drake produced a mixed version of music by mixing rapping with singing. He introduced this concept by his mixtape “So Far Gone.” Drake in this mixtape joined together different singing types and proved that people would like this combo as it became a hit soon after. Other rappers also gave this concept in the past but what differed Drake from them was his cunning sense of confidence of presentation, which was due to his background and his history in television. Drake in his music appears a sensitive character, his music was taken to be both sensitive and influential among his followers, and his this single made him famous in very less time among other rappers. In his songs, Drake shows a deep sadness, and he tried to shape this sadness into his songs. His songs strongly express his urge to be a better human, by openly expressing his grief about the decisions he made and how he want it to change the past and if he is given a chance how he wants to do things differently. Drake in his music included an element of self-analysis, in his songs bravely expresses his views about himself and his grief about his choices.

In his album “Views” he showed a self-analysis by saying that he doesn’t have real friends anymore. The album is characterizing him as alone, and many times in the lyrics he pointed to the importance of family. He concludes the song portraying women made to perceive others by comparing women with Chrysler who try to fool people presenting themselves as Bentley. In his songs, Drake presented that his relationship with other was taken for granted because he tried to be too good for everyone. His album “Views” is full of his stories about betrayal, rejection, and loss of friendship and how it had bad effects on his personality. The title track of this album “Weston Road Flows” is a collection of stories of his carefree days. Drake kept his brotherhood with friends superior to his relationship. In his song “With You,” he presented himself begging for his love to come back, but it seems he would opt to hang out with his friend. For his listeners, Drake’s music is considered redemption and a source of motivation, and most of his songs are used as background tracks in birthdays and graduation for motivation.

Drake in his music tries to help his listeners in standing up after they have been through anything harsh. Whether it be a failure, a broken relationship, or a long tiring life. He uses lyrics from other songs sung by rock bands and famous singers of the nineties and shapes them to make his music. He made the whole album as a motivational book to help listener recover from his loss. He also shapes songs of other singers to present it funnily. By the example of his song “U with Me,” he explains how it was talking to an ex-lover on texts, by using lines like “You send the ‘Are you here? Text without an invite” and “that’s the shit I don’t like” he explains how cool it was talking to her and waiting for her texts to appear. (Hua Hsn, 2016). In this song, he used the idea of Chief Keef’s song “I don’t like” and reshapes it to a sweet and overweening version.

Drake’s recent quarrel with rapper Meek Mill also remains a hot topic of discussion in past year. He worked in collaboration with Meek for his album, but Meek refused to let him promote it. This topic took a sharp turn when Meek accused him of using another rapper to write lyrics for him. Drake reacted by writing several dis tracks for the issue and released a song “Hotline Bling” as a response to prove his originality. However, the issues of originality never seem to cause problems for Drake. He also tried to promote Toronto, his hometown, by the name “the 6” refers to the city’s zip codes or some districts. His albums and performances in the concerts seem made to be used as memes and irony.

The author of this article says there is no need to feel sorry or sympathetic towards Drake’s sad depictions in his albums. He says he felt unnecessary exhaustion by listening to his songs. His new records seem to be affected by some events that happened, like the release of the song by Beyoncé and death of the prince.

Drake’s music seems to have a different approach than what is used by Kanye West or Kendrick Lamar, whose music is mostly focused on arts accountability. Drake’s music, in contrast, is focused on the effort to achieve something while staying relevant to his point. In the end, the author claims that Drake’s music will be favorite in the coming season. In a broader sense, Drake’s music is enjoyable in its way, but it leaves the listener with an unfulfilled feeling of incompleteness and sadness.

The author of this article analyzes the concept of perpetual sadness of the great rapper Drake and the reason behind his depression. He uses references from many of Drake’s albums and uses them to solidify his claim. He analyses many of his songs’ lyrics and observes the meaning the rapper is possibly providing and what are his thoughts and feelings about the concept he is presenting. He goes through the artists past and his work as an actor. The author provides many reasons to why Drake’s work was different from other rappers and how he used his unique style to highlight small issues in relationship and dark realities of life. The author also claims that although the album was a great effort, there are some irrelevant things included. It is observed that though the concepts rapper used were meaningful and he should be held credit for that there is just an extra uneasiness in his songs. His songs leave the listener in a thoughtful bliss but increase the stress in the listener when he thinks deeply into it. The author claims that Drakes’ songs are becoming popular and are used in several motivational anthems and sports events but his songs show a constant struggle with the inner self that seems nowhere to be resolved. These songs seem to provide the listener a self-image and listener feels that the song is directed towards him when he thinks about his relationship or failure in life. The author holds an opposing claim against the rapper and comes to his point that Drake’s music contains some irrelevant content and a bit of stress for the listener. Drake in his song by talking about his feeling towards his broken relationship and how eagerly he wants his love to come back, though done in a light and playful way but shows the rapper’s mental condition on how incomplete he feels about his life. It shows that rapper having a problematic past is pointing towards harsh realities of life and how living such life affected him as a child. By the help of these claims, the author comes down to the conclusion that Drake shows a state of self-conflict in his album.
