Death Penalty

The death penalty is rewarded to individuals who commit crimes of serious nature. But everyday people in different countries are executed for different types of crimes. Sometimes these crimes are serious, or they can be minor too. Different laws prevail in different countries about the death penalty. Death penalty punishes people where their lives are ended. People who are rewarded with death penalty sometimes have to wait for years in prison waiting for their time to come. They don’t know when they will be rewarded death penalty. Different laws prevail in different countries regarding the death penalty. Some countries reward death penalty for crimes including terror or murder while some countries execute people for acts that even shouldn’t be criminalized. Thus law for the death penalty is different for different countries.

The death penalty in my view is against human rights. Nobody has the right to take away anybody’s life except God. Crimes must be penalized but not with death. Giving death penalty gives an impression that there is no way of forgiveness or rectifying oneself. Death penalty not only violates human rights but this act is inhumane, cruel, brutal and degrading. The death penalty must be banned. In some countries, death penalties are even rewarded to individuals under eighteen years old or to people who have a mental illness. This is inhumane. Individuals under eighteen years of age must be counseled and helped to get rid of their bad habits rather just hanging them to death.

There are many reasons why death penalty must be banned. The first reason is that death penalty risks live of innocent people. In many countries, criminals belonging to wealthy families can easily blame poorer people for committing a crime. These wealthy people can turn laws in their favor. In this way, real criminals always find a way out, but innocent are executed. Another reason why death penalty must be abolished is that there are several other options available that are better than the death penalty. For instance counseling criminals, helping them adopt a healthy lifestyle and good habits will help criminals to get rid of criminal behavior. The death penalty is not the only way of abolishing sins, there are many other ways sins, and criminal acts can be abolished.

The sad part of the justice system is that poor and people of color are punished much more severely than wealthy and white people. Crimes are most often designated with poor society or with people of color. If a black is involved in a crime, he will be punished much more severely than a white person committing the same crime. In the same way, people of color and poor people make the highest proportion among those who are penalized with death.

There are many ways death penalty is executed. Shooting, beheading, hanging, injection or electrification are some ways death penalty is rewarded. All these acts are inhumane. The death penalty violates two very important principles of human rights. The first one is the right to live one’s own life and the second one is the right to enjoy liberty and freedom. As death penalty violates very basic human rights it must be abolished immediately (Why the Death Penalty should be abolished, 2013).

The United States is among very few countries were death penalty still prevail. About thirty countries in the year of 1990 had abolished the death penalty, but remaining countries still applied this law. Countries like China and United States reward a very high number of wealthy penalty for those who are involved in serious criminal offenses. Although strict laws and regulations need to observe d if such serious penalties are to be rewarded but the truth is that justice system is still weak in recognizing the right suspect. In America, the about twelve percent of the population make African American people. But unfortunately about forty-two percent of the prisoners in American are people of color, death penalty and other such punishments become victim to racism. People of color suffer from such penalties than white people (Six Reasons to Oppose the Death Penalty, n.d.).

There are cases where people charged with a similar crime are offered different penalty. A case shows that two men were involved in the murder. One of them was rewarded with the death penalty, and he was electrified. The second men were able to get some state evidence. As a result, he was able to escape the death penalty. This sort of discrimination affects the integrity of justice. If death penalty had to exist, then it must be same for all.

The death penalty also gives media and press a chance to publicize some worst kind of offenders. When a death penalty is offered, media and press get a new story. They cover the matter to give it a sense of entertainment. For instance, last dinner, meeting with the family for the last time, last wish and all such stories are created by media to grasp public attention. In my view, the justice system should be free from media and press. Publicizing an execution is making the matter much worse (Meehan, 1982).

Thus there are many reasons why death penalty must be abolished. It an inhumane act, it violates human rights, it becomes victim to racism, discrimination risks the lives of innocent people and media gets a chance to publish stories to grasp public attention for no particular reason. The death penalty is not the only way of abolishing a crime. There could be other ways through which societies could be made much more secure for people to live in. Thus I believe that death penalties must be banned.
