Death Penalty- Criminal Justice

Introduction

The death penalty is a cruel and degrading punishment that is against the violation of human rights. In different countries worldwide, many people are put into execution(The Death Penalty around the World). It is sometimes considered the same as capital punishment, although the penalty is not always followed as execution even when it is upheld on appeal. Sine 1976, 1472 executions have occurred in the USA. According to the death penalty information center publication report, In 2017, the number of executions were 23 in the USA (DEATH PENALTY INFORMATION CENTER Facts about the Death Penalty). It’s a very long debate about whether the death penalty should be abolished in USA or not. In this essay, two articles have been provided; one of them supports that the death penalty should be abolished while the other supports it should not be.

The death penalty should be abolished in the USA. Taking a man’s life by another man is never right. Half of the countries in the world have abolished the death penalty and use capital punishment instead of the death penalty. One of the polls conducted in the USA regarding belief in the judicial system reveals that 65% of people in the USA do not believe in the judicial system of the USA (Truth in Justice).

The death penalty is not compatible with human dignity and human rights. There have always been cases in which innocent man executed in the USA (Hans et al., 2017). It has been said in one of the articles that life in prison is a worthy substitute for the death penalty. This shows that society really appreciates the meaning of losing a life, both to the victims and the survivors (Cohen).

An online poll was conducted on the debate organization online portal in America. Results indicated that 60% of the people in America believe that the death penalty should be abolished. Taking the life of someone you believe has committed a crime is not right; there is always s a possibility that the facts are implanted, and the person is innocent. The person who was murdered, taking a life of a murderer, will not bring back the murdered person. Liberalism in America does signify freedom (Should the U.S. Abolish the Death Penalty?).

In 2007, a national poll was conducted on the death penalty in Washington D.C. Poll indicated that people are losing their confidence in the death penalty. Most people believe that it is quite possible that an innocent man may be executed in the death penalty, which is not ethical and against human rights. They also do not have full confidence in the fairness of the process. The poll showed that the majority of Americans believe that many innocent have been lost in the past because of the death penalty, and this should not be continued in the future, though a life sentence is an alternative that can be chosen instead of the death penalty (Dieter).

In most, the states death penalty is considered a deterrent. One study in texas examined the impact of the death penalty on society. Results indicated that the execution of criminals was helpful for the people living in Texas as those who were executed because of their execution, 60 people may be alive today in Texas (Sam Houston State Deterrent Study).

The death penalty should be abolished in the USA. Although in some states like Texas, it is effective, and it reduces the chances of murders. But on humanitarian grounds taking the life of a man by another man is against humanity. An eye for an eye, the world will go blind. However, instead of the death penalty, a life sentence can be used which ensures that criminals will never take the life of another man again. This is because it has been found evidence that in the past, many innocent people in the USA have lost their lives in the death penalty for a crime they never committed.
