Cultural Competency Essay

The cultural competence is found everywhere when interacting with the cross cultural communities who have different beliefs ethics and norms. Cultural competence could be efficiently achieved by entertaining the individual of the different cultures by some actions which would not be seen as offensive, nor too incapable for the respondent. There are many cultural practices which could be helpful in making the environment more friendly and acceptable. The cultural awareness is considered as one of the primary element of the cultural competence is one of the most important and necessary element in understanding the different cultures of the community. I have an experience to work in a cross-cultural community in which I had a Chinese, Hispanic, American and English working together. We all were working in a team and had to complete the tasks with continuous discussions and necessary interaction as per required on the daily and hourly basis. The main aim of the paper is to discuss my personal refection of interacting with the community who belonged from different community, culture and origins.

All of the four members of the team including me were all working on the projects who had strict deadlines and the management had explained that we may interact with each other as per required or we can even work in the same environment but because of our cultural differences we were unable to complete occupy each other’s personnel space which could be a reason of offense. There were many similarities as well as differences which could be counted as the major conflictions as well as factors which made us close to come together. Since I was the American and my Chinese colleague had a very great issue of sharing the room with the team when work is started. He need loneliness and after any meeting or discussion he was used to stand up for his office and expected calls from us for any kind of assistance required.

This was one of the biggest difference between all of us and the Chinese which made great difficulties while submitting the orders and the tasks on the daily basis. Since the Chinese was also from the different and completely separate culture so he had to go out for the lunch and used exceptional time as well in which he mostly ordered complicated meals which took more time than normally a fast food service took. The Hispanic and the English had also some similarities and differences. The Hispanic was fresh from the Mexico according to him and he was used to work in the teams while being completely engaged with the support and assistance providers. The people from all over the world have difficulties in handling and interacting with the cross cultural environment as well as handling cultural competences.

I am basically from North America and lived since my childhood in Los Angeles in America. My primary culture is western but have a good influence of the Native American, English as well as Latin American and some other minorities. The diversity of the country have a great influence in creating the mixture of different cultures. According to my team and the level of my culture according to their cultures I would rank my culture as on the stage of the cultural incapacity. My cultural competence initially was unable to accept the different cultures and the individuals practicing with some different and conflicting routines. The American culture is mostly compromising and is able to find the ways and paths which would help in adapting in different cultures.

There is great diversity of the foods we eat and the dresses we wear. The fashion is currently very good and highly adaptive. The people are good in starting the discussions as well while because of the intrusion of the English an the other European cultures there is a new factor added in our culture which is creating difficulty in compromising many situations like the personnel space is increased and individuals are mostly and sometimes only speak on the behalf of the specially personnel populations and the communities from which we belong because in the past America have higher problems with the racism as well as classism. The eye contact is normally appreciated but it is necessary to break it after a several time lapses.  The people we are interacting with have a good relationships but they would be from different cultures like the Chinese, Hispanic and the English are working with me and our behavior with each other.

I have a good grip in understanding the different cultures beliefs quickly and always try my best to understand the personnel issues that are due to the different cultures. As in my team the English was supposed to have a disciplined working habits and his room was always tidy. The days when we were supposed to sit in his room and worked there on some orders our existence made him difficult to carry on his work which was a problem as a team from all of us so we tried not to disturb him mostly. The Chinese had the silence issues and during the discussions he was unable to work so we were not able to handle that situation at all. Me, my American and Hispanic team members had to adjust with this situation and also were confused in how to manage them upon this hindrance. The Hispanic was adaptive to different environments and he felt no such objection to work alone or to work with the team so we had to explain him if he wishes to work alone I would prefer to give him some space. As an individual I would highly appreciate the personnel freedom and would definitely like to have a least bounded environment in which I had least possible dependence upon anyone including the parents and other family member.

According to the bias test if I would consider my situation in the interaction of the team whom I am interacting is currently have different races. The Hispanic could be included in the bias test which is including the black and white people. In this test the results would be similar as they are stated in the bias test which concludes that the European American or which we call as American including me and my American colleague as well as the English man could be separated from the category of the blacks and the black Hispanic would be separated differently. The concepts of the Hispanic and the whites are completely different. The Hispanics since have experienced the hard time in the past so they have a built nature to handle themselves according to the environment. We Americans are unable to handle ourselves in the different situations in which the level of authority and judgment description is different.

In the second test which was upon the preference between the straight people and the gay people. It can be explained that the factor which I should necessarily take care include the discrimination of interacting and having eating and proper interactions. The gay people will find discriminative behavior in the hiring as well as in making friendships so they will be supposed to be found alone while the straight people will be found in all categories of the social levels including introverts, extroverts, communicating, helping one another and having good relationships. It should be noticed that while considering the test there must be no ambiguity that the individual is gay or a straight. In my scenario there is no team member in our team who is supposed to be a gay so we are all straight so the interactional and preference difference could not be found at all.

In the third test in which it is discussed that the individuals are testing upon the strong automatic preference for the thin people over the fat people. The test evaluates that the fat people are considered less for some jobs with respect to the thin people. Thin people are expected to work efficiently and they have least possibility of being lazy and uncomfortable in specific situation as well as they also have rarely any serious medical issues.

In a nutshell it can be explained that if I would have considered myself in the cultural pre-competence and definitely I have to manage the visual representation of all the genders and ethnicities. In the current scenario we are all men and meet mostly in the office environment so visual representation is not considered at all and we are all equally dressed in the western office styles. It is recognized highly that the staff have very high cultural limitations for which we have tried our best practices to give them a room to survive in the western and very fast working style.  It included in the example as we have given separate space to the Chinese individual because of his requirement of calm and peaceful environment. The English background individual is also given his personnel space in which he could work according to his disciplined and non-disturbing environment.
