Underemployment is a big problem faced by many countries, including the United States; however, building manufacturing plants in areas with fewer jobs can help create a vast number of jobs as these jobs come with great benefit packages. Furthermore, it also helps support the national economy, and it is considered one of the most important industries in the USA (Thomas).
Large grocery stores are a great way to combat underemployment as they create thousands of jobs. By 2022, Aldi plans to add more than 25,000 jobs. Publix has increased minimum wages three times. Working at the grocery store may seem like a tedious and underpaying job, but it is quite the opposite, as all the larger grocery stores are now providing competitive packages in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic (Ton).
Walgreens is a pharmacy that provides great hourly wages to its employees. This company can help to create more jobs because of its competitive salary. It also provides opportunities to advance one’s career towards either a pharmacy or managerial position. If employees keep on improving, then their benefits will also improve. Jobs like these in underemployment areas can help in reducing the problem as these allow better job prospects.
Food4less would be a great addition to such neighbourhoods as it will allow families to buy food items at an affordable price. This will allow them to sustain themselves as underemployed neighbourhoods face financial hardships. Apart from creating jobs, this company can also help save hard-earned money.
Having Black-owned businesses in the neighbourhood can help strengthen the local economies as smaller communities flourish when small businesses do well. It will also help in closing the wealth gap among the racial communities. Small businesses hire from within the community, which means more people will be employed (Reid and Meade).
