Artificial Intelligence: A Threat

Artificial intelligence is a computer science phenomenon which makes it possible for machines to possess some attributes of humans especially with the intelligence perspective. These machines are created in such a manner that they are capable of imitating the intelligent behavior of humans. There is this existing debate in different fields of expertise concerning whether these intelligent machines are a threat to the humans or not. Therefore, this paper will focus on the threat posed by the existence of these artificial intelligent agents to the human society and provide a conclusion and personal perspective concerning the same.

Artificial intelligence has a short term befit to the society but eventually poses as a threat to the human race. Renowned individuals in various fields including those in science and technology have aired their concerns regarding the issue of artificial agents. One of the outspoken voices of reason regarding this matter is Bill Gates the co founder of the Microsoft Corporation. He has time and again been presenting his views in the many technological summits. He is more concerned with the fact that people are not showing any interest or worry about the artificial intelligence issue (DeLooper, 1).

According to Rawlinson of the BBC news wrote that Bill gates stated that “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well”. He wants people to be more concerned with this issue as it poses a major threat than people are anticipating as they will become very strong for them to be controlled by humans. Rawlinson further wrote that Bill Gates asserts that “A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don’t understand why some people are not concerned”.

Barrat (29), discussed the possible benefits and risks of the super or higher artificial intelligence. He gives one of the major risks of the extreme artificial intelligence as the absolute extermination of the humanity or the human race. He gives the time estimate of reaching the human level intelligence (AGI) and the super intelligence (ASI) as at the end of the current century. According to the basis of his conclusions the AGI will be beneficial while the ASI will present greatest disasters. Sainato in an article in the observer.com states that Stephen Hawking is also concerned with the continued use of the AI in weapon development. According to his analysis he foresees that the human race will be extinguished by the success in the artificial intelligence development.

Moreover, Elon Musk joins in the conversation by stating that the AI is the “greatest existential threat” (Sainato, 1) to the human race. He recommends that some regulatory body or oversight should be put in place at the national as well as the internal levels to ensure people don’t overdo this AI thing. He states that he set up the DeepMind Company so as to keep watch of the developments with the artificial intelligent because he anticipates a negative outcome. According to Russell et al., (4)“Success in the quest for artificial intelligence has the potential to bring unprecedented benefits to humanity, and it is therefore worthwhile to research how to maximize these benefits while avoiding potential pitfalls”.

In conclusion, the common and apparent message is that people need to get concerned about the development intelligent. Scientist and technologist have provided alarm concerning the same and the people should begin to look further the long term effects but not the short term benefits they are enjoying now. One of the things noted is that AI will eventually replace humans in all spheres of the economy most especially in employment. This is because of their capability to outperform humans in all the area of life. Thus, people should view AI as a threat to humanity and begin looking for solutions before it gets worse.
