The economist, Zagorsky(2016), analyzes the decline in the trend of people getting married and presents various reasons. According to Zagorsky(2016), fewer people are opting to get married all over the world and the reasons range from economic conditions to religious beliefs; and from an increase in women’s literacy rate to a personal disposition of considering marriage to be an outdated tradition. He further elaborates that although the government plays a positive role in promoting marriage through benefits and public policies that favor married people, still the trend of co-habiting is more popular among the masses. The author concludes the article by speculating a change in societal structure and policies of the future.
Zagorsky (2016) has supported the claims made in this article through other studies and government data, therefore, this article can be regarded as a credible source. The use of pictograms to represent data of marriage trends over the years makes it easily comprehensible and has enabled the author to conclude that over time this trend would cause some sort of societal shift. This source can help shape my essay because it highlights numerous reasons for this trend, all of which can be further elaborated on, in my essay. Moreover, further comparison can be drawn to identify the relevance of this source in today’s society. It can help me answer questions such as: What is the trend of marriage amongst people today as compared to the year 2016? Has the economic aspect of the decrease in marriage trend changed in today’s economy? Did it get better or worse? This source has been quite useful and has opened up various avenues of study related to the data and reasons for a decrease in the marriage trend.
