Allen (2019), highlights the impact of social media usage, especially amongst teens. She explains its effect on relationships by exploring the concept of social displacement from the points of views of both; proponents stating that social media usage provides such a wholesome interaction that the need to meet physically is decreased; and opponents stating that immediate relationships are ignored as people are immersed in online interactions. This source further highlights the detrimental effects of social media in the form of cyberbullying, pornography and identity development; in contrast, it also sheds light on social media as a source of entertainment and creativity platform. The opposing views that social media results in superficial relationships and that social media provide a vast support system are also discussed. The article concludes that today’s generation relates to technology in a manner quite different from the past.
Allen (2019) has explored the use of social media from the points of view of proponents as well as opponents and has taken a rather neutral stance. The benefits and detriments of social media are evidenced through research and reports such as the 2018 Common Sense Media Report therefore, this article can be regarded as a reliable source and is not based on the presumptions of the author. This source can be useful for my essay because it gives many ideas to present for and against the topic. The ideas can be elaborated and further extended by applying the concept of social displacement during the pandemic. The author concludes her article and states that the tech natives are differently-abled and better equipped to deal with technology exposure. Overall, this source is quite relevant to my essay topic and it offers ideas that I can research thoroughly before reaching a conclusion of my own.
