Academic Appeal Essay

The academic appeal involves procedures that enable a student to ask for the evaluation of decisions that are associated with academic awards or progress. In the past days, never existed. Students were forced to accept the result that they were awarded. The educational instructors argue that opening of the academic appeal word has created a great hell for them. Most students do not agree to have failed in their education, they always claim that they need an appeal. However, from my personal experience, an academic appeal is a procedure for justice and correction of academic award errors that evidently occurs.

The article “why colleges shower their students with A’s” was written by Brent Staples, an American essayist, and journalist. The article explains that the increase of good grade is due to the reason that most students are well prepared for appealing. He refers this as cosmetic surgery where low grades are restructured to a good grade. He illustrates this using the descriptions of prof. Paul Korshin in Pennsylvania University who refereed the grievance panel as a “rhinoplasty committee”. He says that in the past it was better since students were satisfied by their grades but currently the students are better equipped to appeal low grades.

Although, in a great perspective this is not the case as Brent Stapes claims. In my first university examination, I was awarded very low grades in my core course subjects. This was unrealistic since I had read enough and was sure of getting high grades. In my assignment I had performed extremely well to the extent my instructors graded high scores. All of my classmates referred me as a genius in those core units. However, after examination, I was graded poor grades. This made me appeal for remarking, after this, the appealing board apologized for the mistakes and those instructors accepted they had marked so many student papers and my papers were not completely marked. This clearly indicates that instructors are not perfect and they can make mistakes, thus giving a low grade. This grievous mistake by my instructors had the potential to terminate my studies. Failing four courses meant I had to be discontinued; however in reality it was not true that I had failed my paper. At times it gets illogical passing your assignments well then ending with low grades, this alone is a reason that can foster an individual to ask for an academic appeal to get justices.

Considering various circumstance, I was unable to let the unjust award of low grade remain yet they have negative effects. In addition to termination of studies, studies interruption and recommendation of lower qualification are among the negative effects that one has to face. Thus it will be unfair if the student was deliberately or accidentally given low grades.

As it’s in all professional such as doctors, so is it with instructors in making errors. All human being in their professional make mistake. Not only marking omissions errors can be made but also counting and recording errors. These are potential errors that can result in unjust awarding of grades. The remedy that can rectify this error is through an academic appeal whenever a student feels unsatisfied.

To sum, many may consider the academic appeal as a defensive mechanism that gives students ways of getting good grades throughout the education system, but they should also consider its benefits in the path of justice. Instructors can make mistakes that award students low grades deliberately or accidentally, resulting in unfair consequences. These consequences have a potential effect on the student study life. Therefore, an academic appeal is a pathway and remedy for the possible mistakes that can be made by instructors and is better to support its existence in the educational institution.
